Asim Kovacevic

Asim Kovacevic, a graduate of the UAW-LETC Advanced Automotive Training Program at the Clearfield Job Corps Center, recently spoke with students in the program. He used the opportunity to share with the UAW students his background and experiences since leaving Job Corps.

As an immigrant from Bosnia, Asim has a unique perspective on life. He came to the United States in 1994, with few or no English language skills but determined to better his life. After learning about the Program through Lutheran Social Services in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, he rose to the challenge by entering Job Corps. Asim traveled to Utah and entered the Clearfield Center. He selected Clearfield for two main reasons: first, Clearfield had an English-As-a-Second Language (ESL) program, which he desperately needed, and second, Clearfield offered the Advanced Automotive Program.

Upon arriving at Clearfield, Asim quickly displayed the maturity and attitude that separated him from his peers. During his tenure, he scored an overall 4.9 or higher on 18 Performance Evaluations. He also rose to Honor Student status and remained there for the duration of his three-year stay in the program.

Among his other noteworthy accomplishments, Asim completed High School, Welding, UAW Air Conditioning, UAW Engine Performance, UAW Electrical/Electronic Systems and Work-Based-Learning (WBL). While on WBL, Asim worked for Larry H. Miller Lexus. His work ethic and dedication to the job proved beneficial. Prior to completing WBL, he was offered a full-time position with Lexus making a flat-rate wage of over $17 per hour, in addition to a sponsorship to the Toyota Technical Education Program (T-TEN) at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah.

Today, Asim has obtained seven Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certifications, completed the T-Ten Program, and graduated from Weber State with a Bachelor of Science degree in Automotive Technology. As part of the T-Ten Program, Asim participated in an internship with Toyota Motor Sales in Torrence, California. He is currently interviewing for a position with the Management Training Program at the Toyota Corporate Office.

Without question, Asim is another successful graduate from the UAW-LETC Program.
